Danjiangkou City



Danjiangkou City is located in the northwest of Hubei Province, the middle and upper reaches of the Han River, the junction of Jianghan Plain and Qinling Bashan Mountains, and the junction of Hubei and Henan provinces. With a total area of 3121 square kilometers, the city has jurisdiction over 20 towns (offices, divisions, districts), 194 villages, and a total population of 470000. It is the core water source area of the Middle Route Project of the South to North Water Transfer, a national civilized city, a national health city, a national garden city, "the fourth batch of 'green water and green mountains are Jinshan and Yinshan' practice and innovation bases", and one of the top 100 happy counties (cities) in China. From 2013 to 2019, it was awarded the title of "Outstanding Unit in County Economy Work of the Province" for seven consecutive years, and was selected into 21 key counties (cities) of high-quality development in Hubei Province.
It has a long history and culture. 4000 years ago, Dayu controlled the flood here, and 2500 years ago, Confucius Qu Yuan came here to sing songs, which gave birth to the Canglang culture. Danjiangkou has a history of more than 2200 years. It was called Junling in the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period. Since the Qin Dynasty, Wudang County was established, renamed Junzhou in the Sui and Tang Dynasties, and Junxian County since the Republic of China. The old county seat was completely submerged when the Danjiangkou Water Control Project was built in 1958. The current site is built on the basis of the dam, named after its location at the mouth where the Danjiang River flows into the Han River. In 1983, it was approved by the State Council to remove counties into cities, and in 1985, it was approved by the State Council to be a Class A open city. The urban area is built on the basis of water, thrives on the edge of water, and is beautiful because of water. It is known as the "Water Capital of China". Wudang Taoist culture, Hanshui culture, Canglang culture, red culture, immigration culture and folk song culture complement each other here, and Wudang martial arts are world-renowned.
Tourism resources are quite unique. In the territory, the world cultural heritage, 5A level scenic spot, Wudang Mountain, a Taoist holy place, and the source of the middle route of the South to North Water Transfer, the largest artificial freshwater lake in Asia, and Danjiangkou Reservoir, a national scenic spot, are in perfect harmony. There are 14 Grade A and above scenic spots in the city, such as Danjiangkou Dam, Jingle Palace, Taiji Gorge, Nanshendao, Canglang Sea, etc. In recent years, cultural and tourism projects, such as Wudang Daming Peak, Memorial Park of the Middle Route of the South to North Water Transfer Project, have been completed successively, making it the designated city to host the National Water Motor Boat Competition. It has successively won the honorary titles of "National Tourism Card", "China's Beautiful Landscape City", "Top 100 Counties and Cities in China's County Tourism Competitiveness", etc.
Featured products are abundant. With an annual output of 268000 tons of citrus, it is the largest high-quality citrus production base in the north of China. There are many kinds of characteristic aquatic products. Fresh water fish such as silver carp, bighead carp and whitebait have passed the certification of organic fish origin and products. There are eight national geographical indication products, including Wudang mandarin orange, Danjiangkou mouth raising culter, Danjiangkou fish, Danjiangkou bighead carp, Danjiangkou shrimp, Wudang plum nut, Junzhou name sun cured tobacco, Jinzhuangyan tribute rice.
The ecological environment is well protected. Focusing on the goal of ensuring the "sustainable water supply from the first reservoir to the north", we will further promote the construction of ecological civilization. The water quality of Danjiangkou reservoir area has remained above Class II of the national surface water environmental quality standard for many years. Among the 109 water quality monitoring indicators in the reservoir area, 106 of them meet the Class I water quality standard. The forest coverage rate in the city reaches 65.7%. In 2012, 2014 and 2015, the Danjiangkou reservoir area was rated as a county with slightly improved ecological environment quality nationwide, In 2015, it was awarded the title of the first "China's good water" water source. In 2017, it was listed as the protection scope of the "new three lakes" (Danjiangkou Reservoir, Erhai Lake in Yunnan, Baiyangdian Lake in Hebei) by the Ministry of Environmental Protection of the People's Republic of China. In 2018, it was listed as the national strategic water resources guarantee zone. The first phase of the middle route of the South to North Water Transfer Project has been officially open to water since December 12, 2014. As of June 1, 2021, 38.57 billion cubic meters of water has been supplied to the north, benefiting more than 67 million residents in four provinces and cities, and basically alleviating the serious water shortage in the north.
