Wudang Mountain Tourism Special Economic Zone
Wudang Mountain Tourism Special Economic Zone is located in Shiyan City, Hubei Province, China with the ancient city of Xiangfan in the east, the virgin forest of Shennongjia in the south, Shiyan City in the west, and the largest artificial lake in Asia - Danjiangkou Reservoir in the north.
There are many scenic spots in the Wudang Mountain Tourism Special Economic Zone, which are as many as stars in the sky and as splendid as the most colorful brocade. Especially the Wudang Mountain, which is the most famous Taoist mountain with “72 peaks, 36 rocky mountains, 24 streams, 11 caves, three ponds, nine springs, ten pools, nine wells, ten rocks and nine terraces.” The mountain has different scenery in four seasons. In spring, mountains are verdant and flowers blossom; in summer, wind and thunder echo in the mountain with clouds and fog floating around; in autumn, trees are dressed in beautiful colors with fragrance of golden laurel; in winter, peaks are covered by ice and snow wrapped in elements and mountains are like dancing silver serpents.
Wudang Mountain is the birthplace of Wudang Taoism and Wudang Boxing, and its Taoist architecture can be traced back to the 7th century. The palaces and temples are embedded in peaks, caves and valleys with ingenious layout, grand scale and exquisite building methods, which embodies the artistic achievements of the religious architecture of Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, representing the highest level of ancient Chinese architecture.
Wudang Mountain attracts tourists from home and abroad with its unique charm, and it is still popular today. The Taoist temple withstanding thousands of years of vicissitudes, melodious Taoist music, magical Wudang martial arts, various myths and legends, together with those devout pilgrims are conveying the ancient cultural spirits of China. Wudang Mountain Tourism Special Economic Zone has formulated the grand goal of “creating a world famous scenic area and building a Chinese landscape garden city.” To achieve this goal and create a tourism and living environment that makes tourists, investors and local people satisfied, the environment, protection and construction of the scenic area have been comprehensively and scientifically planned in recent years. More gardening and landscaping efforts have been made in scenic spots and along the highways, and the roads for tourists and supporting facilities have been fully restored and improved. Many infrastructure construction projects have been in full swing, including Wudang Mall pedestrian street, Wudang Mountain tourist center, five-star holiday inn, folk culture village project, Wudang cultural square and Wudang museum, and Wudang performing arts center.
Wudang Mountain Special Zone is changing with each passing day, with rapid progress in urban infrastructure construction, continuous improvement in service functions, complete facilities for culture, education, health, sports, science and education. People in the special zone have further enhanced their awareness to protect scenic spots, developed stronger sense of social civilization and become more willing to develop tourism.
Wudang Mountain Special Zone enjoys convenient transportation. Many railways and highways run through the zone, including Wuhan-Chongqing Railway, Hubei-Chongqing Railway, Hankou-Danjiangkou Railway, and Wuhan-Shiyan Highway. The zone is also adjacent to Laohekou and Xiangfan airports. As China has boosted its train speed and began the construction of Shiyan airport, the city’s transportation will be further improved.
At present, Wudang Mountain Special Zone is an National AAAA Tourist Attraction, a National Park of China, a key religious place for public activities and the hometown of martial arts. In 1994, Wudang Mountain was included in the World Cultural Heritage List by UNESCO and the World Heritage Committee.
