Wudang Temple Fair

Wudang Mountain Temple Fair is a folk custom activity evolved from the unique pilgrimage activities of believers. It started in the late Eastern Han Dynasty, flourished in the Song Dynasty and flourished in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and has always been popular in Wudang Mountain area of Shiyan City.
The temple fair has two periods every year, from the 23rd to the 16th of March of the second lunar month, and from the first day of September to the tenth day of September. Among them, the temple fair on March 3rd and September 9th is the most grand.
If you want to trace back to the origin of Wudang Temple Fair, you should start from the God of Wudang - Zhenwu Great Emperor. It is said that Zhenwu Emperor ascended in Wudang Mountain. Therefore, on the birthday, ascension day and festival of Zhenwu Emperor, believers and practitioners from all over the country would gather in Wudang Mountain to offer sacrifices to Zhenwu Emperor.
Then, the folk formed temple fairs based on the custom of religious activities, which are mainly "March 3" and "September 9" in the lunar calendar. In 2008, "Wudang Temple Fair" was listed in the List of Representative Projects of National Intangible Cultural Heritage, which represents the achievements of the surrounding folk in promoting the revival of the temple fair, and also represents the official recognition of its cultural value.

Today, Wudang Temple Fair has formed a complete folk custom activity system integrating pilgrimage to the mountain, religious rites and folk art activities. During the temple fair every year, various folk art activities are held by the government literary and artistic groups and folk performance units in Shiyan, where Wudang Mountain is located, as well as incense fairs in various places participating in the temple fair. The troupes from neighboring counties, lions, phoenix lanterns, Xuanwu lanterns, dragon lanterns, dry boats, stilts, storytelling, singing, acrobatics and acrobatics from various villages and towns will also participate in the performance.
The cultural activities during these temple fairs came from the spontaneous organization of the masses, which protected, displayed and inherited a considerable number of folk art forms, deepened their connotation exchange, and promoted the improvement of folk art. At the same time, as a local tourism brand, Wudang Temple Fair has also played a significant role in the development of the surrounding economy.
