Automobile culture

“Imbued with a spirit that can conquer the world, with automobile industry being the pillar of the country.” Among the cultural elements of Shiyan, in addition to “blessed and treasured land of Wudang” and “the source of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project,” there is also a title of honor featuring extremely modern industrial vitality, “Eastern Detroit.”

Shiyan is built and prospers for automobile industry. It is one of the largest automobile industrial bases in China and Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle, the top automobile company in China and third in the world, is based in the city. The transformation from “mountain city” to “automobile city” is led by Dongfeng, which has driven the prosperity and development of the city for decades. Dongfeng’s entrepreneurial spirit is also integrated with Shiyan’s cultural inheritance, which has derived a unique automobile culture.

In 1969, the great leader Mao Zedong considered that First Automobile Work in the northeast China was vulnerable to war, and that the geographical distribution of the country’s industrial assembly was not conducive to lead the war in-depth. Being forward-looking, Chairman Mao decisively planned to locate the automobile production site in Shiyan, so as to protect the survival of the national automobile industry under the possible extreme war conditions. Hence the glorious history of establishing the second automobile work started. Also, Shiyan began to build itself into a “Motor City.”

At a time of social and cultural upheaval, the order of production and life of all social strata was uncertain. In the face of such objective conditions, the government still overcame all difficulties and sent a large number of resources and talents to Shiyan. The development of automobile industry started from the construction of infrastructure. There were no available roads, so people built them inch by inch. There were no equipment, so people carried and moved them to Shiyan piece by piece. With joint efforts of the people, mountains were excavated for tunnels, valleys were filled, and rivers were diverted. Finally, with the fearless spirit of endeavour, the second automobile work was built up, supporting the national automobile industry in central and western China until now.

Today, the second automobile work has thoroughly remould itself into Dongfeng Motor Corporation, which owns many independent and joint venture brands. It has the production capacity of all categories of vehicles, including commercial vehicles, passenger vehicles, and various special vehicles. Also, its supporting industrial categories are too numerous to list.

Shiyan, the oriental motor city withstanding decades of vicissitude, deserves its honor and will embrace a brighter future.
