伍家沟民间故事

Wujiagou folktales is a local folk literature in Danjiangkou, Shiyan City. It is one of the national intangible cultural heritage and a rare literature treasure inherited from early times.

Seventy miles away from the golden top of Wudang Mountain, the Taoist holy land, Wujiagou is in the hinterland of the origin of the early Chinese traditional culture. In the vast ancient rural areas, home-grown and time-honored traditional folktales reflected people’s daily life. The ancient Chu culture has been represented in the villagers’ customs, production mode, clothing, food, living and transportation, and folktales. Influenced by Taoist culture, the traditional cultural background, and the accumulation of historical culture, the wonderful folktales were made and passed down from storyteller to storyteller in family life or during daily work.

The Wujiagou folktales can be divided into six categories: myth, legend, story, fable, fairy tale and joke.

Wujiagou folktales retain quite original folk characteristics and generally reflect how the most common masses create stories. For example, the legend of Wudang Mountain and the legend of Chen Shimei are both local “native work.”
As one of the representatives of Wujiagou folktales, Woman married to dog is the first myth about primitive dog totem in China. The story shows how people in primitive society suffered from wild fire. Another story named Wa Duan Gang conveys the information about reproduction worship. In the story, the content about Li Zicheng has never been heard of outside Wujiagou, which obviously indicates that he had visited the Wudang Mountain area. Although the story The scholar of Qin Dynasty dies today features heavy traditional tint, it is a modern work.In Wujiagou, the story is widely passed on by word of mouth. No matter people are folk song singers carrying on the career from generation to generation or ordinary farmers in the fields, they tell stories. The stories cover a wide range, including the creation of the world by Pangu, the creation of man by the goddess Nuwa, the marriage between a girl and a dog in primitive times, and contemporary anecdotes. They talk about everything ever showing up during the 5,000-year history of China. The local villages and families pass down the stories from generation to generation, so that people can enjoy them by savoring the tradition and history.
