Wudang Mountain Palace Taoist Music, also known as “Wudang rhyme,” is a traditional music in Wudang Mountain area, Shiyan City. It can be traced back to ancient times. It is a combination of Han folk culture in Qinba area and Han court music from the Tang Dynasty to the Ming Dynasty, and reached its peak in the Ming Dynasty. It has the performance form of song, dance and music, which not only retains the musical characteristics of Quanzhen Taoism’s Shifang Rhyme, but also features the charm of multi-denomination music integrating various kinds of rhymes and instruments.
On May 20, 2006, Wudang Mountain Palace Taoist Music was included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage list.
Wudang Mountain Palace Taoist Music has a long history. At the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty, with the spread of Wudou Rice Religion from Hanzhong to Wudang Mountain, its ritual song and dance became the early form of Palace Taoist Music. In ancient times, witches and wizards “entertained the gods” and “invite the gods to come” by singing and dancing, so as to achieve the purpose of blessing. Such performance form has a profound influence on the footwork in Wudang Mountain Palace Taoist Music.

Wudang Mountain Palace Taoist Music are mostly ancient music, court music and relatively mature artistic folk music. The general characteristics of its form and style are mainly like those of the music in south China, especially south of the Yangtze River. The main representative of such music, Kesong (Morning and evening reciting) music is the purest type of Taoist music viewing from its song name, form and style, which preserves the oldest tunes of Taoist music.
Wudang Mountain Palace Taoist Music not only has the commonness of Chinese Taoist music, but also has its own unique personality and characteristics. It is solemn and elegant, tolerant and inclusive, and blended with the north and the south music style. Also, it has the religious style of the fusion of Taoism and Buddhism. It is not only the treasure of Chinese folk music, but also a rare important cultural heritage of Taoism music. It greatly broadens the subject of folk music and leaves a profound enlightenment for the development of Chinese folk music.
