The production of Gastrodia elata in Yunyang District has a long history. Since ancient times, wild Gastrodia elata has grown in the high mountains around Canglang Mountain. The production of Gastrodia elata has been recorded in the Records of Yunyang Prefecture in the Ming Dynasty and the Records of Yunxian County in the Qing Dynasty. After liberation, Zhang Guorong, vice general manager of the medicinal materials company, conducted artificial cultivation experiments on wild Gastrodia elata. In 1972 and 1977, he successively developed asexual propagation and sexual propagation planting techniques of Gastrodia elata, and promoted them in the whole region. In 1979, more than 2200 gastrodia technicians and gastrodia enthusiasts from 13 provinces and cities across the country went to Yunyang District to learn the technology of gastrodia wild to domestic production. Yunyang became the birthplace of gastrodia cultivation nationwide.

Unique sensory characteristics: Yunyang Gastrodia elata is a parasitic herb of orchid family. The whole plant has no roots, no green leaves, only aboveground flower stems and underground tubers. The plant height of Yunyang Gastrodia elata is about 1.5 meters, the stem is orange red, the flower is yellow and slightly orange red, and the flowering period is from April to May. The dried tubers of Yunyang Gastrodia elata are compressed and slightly curved in shape, with reddish brown withered buds at the top, commonly known as "parrot's mouth", and round navel shaped marks at the other end, commonly known as "concave navel". They are generally 6-14cm long, 2.4-4cm wide, 0.6-2.2cm thick, 30-65g heavy, yellowish white to yellowish brown on the surface, slightly transparent, with horizontal ring lines and vertical wrinkles formed by point protrusions, hard and not easy to break. The section is relatively flat, yellowish white to light brown, horny, with urine odor and slightly bitter taste.
